I just now discovered this site so I'm obviously extremely late here, but this is an extremely thoughtful and cogent analysis of both the WSU game and of the program as a whole. Clearly Edwards isn't going anywhere regardless of the way the season ended and how badly recruiting has cratered. And my fear is that given the way Anderson handled the baseball program in keeping Tracy Smith long after he should have been shown the door, it could be another 1 or even 2 more disappointing seasons before Edwards moves on, and who knows what shape football will be in by that point.
Thanks for commenting. I have some of the same fears. I don't believe Ray will fire Herm until he absolutely has to. A .500 or worse season next year will probably do the trick, though.
To be fair to Ray, though, there's a pretty decent argument to be made that this season is not a great time to fire a head coach and commence a search for a new one, especially with so much uncertainty regarding the investigation. It would be hard to get a new coach on board when we don't even know what the sanctions will be. ASU might be better off making a new hire once the sanctions are in place and the new coach knows what he's getting into. I'm not sure this is what Ray is thinking, but this is the best defense of his decision to keep Herm this year.
